Testing pre-S4 Cooling Fan Clutch

Testing pre-S4 Cooling Fan Clutch

Here's a clever method to see whether the cooling fan clutch is locking up properly:

If you look at the fan shaft you'll see it has flats on it. A 19mm wrench is a perfect fit. Perhaps it;s needed during disassembly. I took a piece of 18 gauge steel and cut a 19mm slot in it so it fits over those flats. I then drilled a hole for one of the 6 fan mounting bolts and bolted it on. I now have a (temporary) direct drive, no clutch, fan. The result is that my temperature gauge is now solidly plated in the middle with very little fluctuation. Solid evidence that I need to fix the fan clutch I would say.
