The dimmer is probably bad. Look underneath the pod and remove the two wires going to the dimmer thumbwheel thing-ah-ma-jig. Short the two wires and see if the dash light goes on. You need to turn on the parking lights to in order to do this, of course.

Perhaps there is a simple solution. You may have spun the wheel that controls variable dash light illumination. It is on the left bottom edge of the instrument pod. If turning this does not work, remove the long black cover - 2 screws. Then spray some electrical contact cleaner on the spring like side. Rotate the toothed disk, spray. Wait to dry. Check results. Radio Shack carries plastic safe contact cleaner. I used the one with the plastic brush attached to the nozzle to get some scrubbing action.
