AC Starts out Cold but Dosen't Stay Cold

#1
This last weekend I drove around 1000 miles in 100+ degree heat. My AC blew very cold as usual, but toward the end it started acting funky. I narrowed it down to the cabin temperature sensor (next to the console behind that little black round thingy) I found that if I placed my hand over the sensor, it would make the air blow much colder. This makes me think the sensitivity my be out of whack. the air coming out of the vent was beginning to heat up, and I would place my hand over the sensor then it would blow ice cold for a while. Its either the sensor itself, or the climate control unit itself. I would rather replace the sensor to rule it out. This happened a while back, and if I turn off the air conditioning and turn it back on
immediately, the thing practically blew ice cubes! Any ideas?

My ventilation system suddenly switched to full heat. A thump in the region of the temperature sensor restored things. This reoccurred a couple of days later; and several thumps were required. Yesterday I shot a little CRC into the sensor's opening. So far, so good.
